WELCOME TO OBSERVED COACHING
Observed coaching is the place where all of your core classes, mentor coaching sessions and learning conversations with your peer clients start to come together. In class you will coach with feedback from your Observed Trainer. However, unlike labs or mentor coaching, the feedback is both verbal and written, and will document your use of the ICF competencies.
OVERVIEW
- 5 Coaching Sessions (as Coach)
- 5 Coaching Sessions (as Observer)
- Written and Verbal Feedback
- Identify Areas for Improvement
Participation
You are required to attend a total of 15 hours Observed Coaching. This includes a 5 week coaching series to total 7.5 hrs (you need to register) and then 5 weeks of further observation to total 7.5 hrs (you can join any Observed Lab). Each lab runs for 90 mins
The Role of Coach
This series is all about you – The Coach. You will record 5 coaching sessions (one each week) and present them to your Observed Trainer and peers during your weekly lab. Your Observed Trainer will provide feedback and guidance against the ICF’s PCC markers.
You must commit to a 5 week series (7.5 hrs) where you will be one of three students who coach each week.
You must attend all 5 weeks, as per your registration.
The Role of Observer
You will observe a range of coaching sessions, and consider your personal observations with those of the Observed Trainer – making note of markers you identified or might have missed. Use this learning to improve your own knowledge, skills and technique.
You can choose 5 Labs from any coaching series (7.5 hrs) for the role of peer observer.
Join any of the classes shown in the schedule below.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I Fail Observed?
Observed Coaching sits inside the Performance Evaluation.
ACSTH Students (eg. Vocational)
You will be given feedback against the ACC markers. Once all 15 hours have been completed, you may apply for graduation.
ACTP Students (eg. Professional and Advanced)
Observed Coaching will prepare you for your oral exam. During, or upon completion of Observed, you will receive a recommendation from your observed trainer. This will either be that you:
- are LIKELY to Pass the Oral exam
If you are observed as coaching at PCC level and feel confident, then you will continue on to complete the oral exam - are NOT LIKELY to Pass the Oral Exam
If neither you nor the Trainer feels you will not pass the oral exam it will be highly recommended that you circle back to further Mentor Coaching or Peer Coaching before completing the Oral Exam.
How is Feedback Structured?
You will receive feedback on what you do well in balance with what still needs to be developed. For the first two sessions, your assessor will provide verbal feedback. For your final three sessions, your assessor will provide both written and verbal feedback. All feedback and evaluations are based on the International Coaching Federation core competencies – using the PCC markers as the behavioral indicators for how those competencies show up in a coaching session.
Do I record a full session?
The recording must be 20 mins in duration. It does NOT need to be a full session but it must be a coaching conversation that showcases your coaching skills, knowledge and expertise as being PCC level (or for Vocational students, ACC). You might choose to bring a 20 minute sample that showcases your ability to establish the coaching agreement, or you might decide you need to work on Actions and Goal setting so you might bring a 20 minute sample from the end of a coaching session.
